A History of the Blender

Industrial blenders are giant blending machines that are used to mix the large volumes of ingredients necessary in commercial production. blending machines look a lot like home mixers except on a much, much larger scale. Industrial blenders are optimized to handle the specific ingredients in the product they’re associated with. Features like mixing speed, mixing times and batch temperatures are precisely controlled through automated settings.

A Brief History of the Blender

The first blender was invented in 1022 by a Wisconsin engineer named Stephen J. Poplawski. Poplawski had a very specific goal in mind for his device: He wanted to commission it to pharmacies so that they could emulsify Horlick’s malt powder into milk more effectively. He succeeded, and malted milk became a staple of the drugstore soda fountain circuit. Poplawski’s product was eventually sold to homemakers under the name “the Osterizer.”

In 1936, a bandleader named Fred Waring was looking for a way to incorporate more vegetables into his diet. Waring headed a musical ensemble called Fred Waring and His Pennsylvanians, and the stresses of the wandering minstrel lifestyle had caused him to develop an ulcer. Waring had studied engineering in addition to music, and he was something of an inventor.

One night after a show, an acquaintance of Waring’s named Frederick Osius came backstage to show off a compact fractional horsepower electric motor that he’d been working on. Waring was intrigued. Suppose you combined this motor with Poplawski’s blender? Thus was the Waring Blender born in 1937.

The Waring Blender proved popular indeed because its blades were strong enough to pulverize ice cubes, which meant that it could be used to concoct mixed bar drinks. Fred Waring was able to use his celebrity to promote his invention on the numerous radio shows on which he was asked to appear.

In 1953, Waring’s company customized a blender for a very special use: Dr. Jonas Salk needed a blender to help process the cultures that were used in the development of the polio vaccine that has prevented millions of people around the world from contracting infantile paralysis.
